Before teaching driver's education at a public or private high school in New Jersey, prospective instructors must obtain a teaching certificate from the state's Department of Education. To qualify for driver's education certification, candidates must first earn a teaching certificate in health and physical education. This health and physical education certification is earned in two steps: the certificate of eligibility and the standard certificate. The student must show evidence of coursework in Health and Physical Education to obtain the official state Driver Education Teaching certification in New Jersey/New York. New Jersey Certification for Driver The requirements to earn this certificate include: a valid New Jersey driver's license of three or more years; a Bachelors degree with certification in health sciences or physical education; and complete one of the following courses. Classroom and Behind the Wheel: 3 credits. Admission to this certification program requires a valid driver’s license from any state or a learner’s permit from the State of New Jersey.
